Peer Support Meetings
The group offers support through our meetings held on the second Wednesday of each month (February to November).
Why attend a group?
People may seek the support of the group for different reasons. Going through a traumatic experience can sometimes leave you feeling alone and isolated. A group setting offers a place where you can feel safe listening to others tell their stories.
Although your friends and family can provide you with support, it may not be enough – you might not want to burden them with your grief or perhaps you feel like you can’t fully express yourself.
You might need the support of others who understand what you’re going through.
What happens at a group?
Generally, a meeting beings with people introducing themselves and sharing their experiences. Because of the nature of homicide, everyone has a different experience and is at different stages of the process. Some may have lost someone a long time ago, with the case still unsolved.
There can be sadness and bewilderment, anger and resentment, guilt and shame. Other times there can be humour. NO matter what feelings are expressed, most people usually feel a sense of relief.
Everything said at a meeting is confidential, and members will not share anything said within the group unless given permission. It is up to you how much you share – there are no expectations – and all sorts of feelings can be expressed at a meeting.
